Giant Squid attacks Taranaki vessel April 1, 2017

Taranaki fisherman Trevor Ally snapped this photo while out fishing just south of New Plymouth yesterday. The fisherman on the boat is Blair Foister, from Invercargill. He had been visiting New Plymouth and was out fishing for gurnard when the giant squid began circling his boat. “As we hauled in the fishing gear the darn squid seemed to think we were taking his dinner and came after us.” Ally reported seeing the squid trying to wrap it’s tentacles over the boat. “I was amazed how calm the lads on the boat seemed to be – I’d have been freaking out and apologizing for ever eating squid rings!” Thankfully no one was hurt in the incident. “I gave the squid a good couple of jabs with the gaff and it soon let go and swam off” says Foister.
